Social Networking and Your Profile

With all the writing that I have done to help with working from home, such as SEO and approaching your contact list, I thought it best to also point out that if you are using the internet to promote yourself and what you are doing you are also going to want to consider using social networking, and with social networking comes the photo.

It doesn’t have to be anything immaculate, but you are going to want to let people see you for who you are so they can associate a face with the person they are speaking to over the phone. A lot of people use social networking, and almost everyone that uses social networking has a photo of themselves, their kids, and pets on their profile.

However, there are a couple of rules of thumb when it comes to posting photo’s for business purposes especially if you want people to take you seriously.

  • Photo’s of your kids and pets are not considered professional. You may think they are cute and adorable but using photo’s like that take away from the personalization and professionalism that you are trying to do.
If you cannot bear to take down the picture you have of your little one or your fluffy puppy then consider making another profile, or a different page specifically for your business.
  • Funny faces, obscene quotes, holding a drink in your hand (unless that is what you are promoting) are other types of photo’s that take away from professionalism.
If you are building a business online, you are going to want to keep your social profile as professional as possible. The night out on the town photo’s are best left on a personal page or profile that potential clients or contacts are not going to see. I have a page dedicated to what I do from home, granted I am not on it very much but all of my articles are posted on it.
If you are against posting a photo of yourself on the internet, and who can blame you with all that goes on with the internet, consider using a logo. A logo is another professional way to let people know about you and what you do. If you are using a logo be sure to write an about me section somewhere on your page or profile so people can learn a little about you and your why.
A few of my favorite Social Networking sites are:
Facebook, twitter, Linkedin, and Google+. You can pretty much link them all together so you don’t have to spend extra time posting your update. The only personal profile I have is on Facebook, all the others are for what I do at home.
Thank you for reading and please feel free to comment, rate, and share!

  1. Hey, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty wonderful platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?

    • I am actually looking for a different theme myself. Although it is nice to have different page layouts and what not, there are some errors that annoy me. For instance, I set up the front page to only show a summary of my posts, yet it shows the whole post instead. Good luck with your search and thank you for the comment :)
